Costs |
I'll keep a list of all the extras that I have to buy, and any incidental costs. It might give potential builders an idea about what to expect.
|
Van hire |
£120 |
I hired a 7.5 ton lorry. It was only about £40 more expensive than a Luton, but had a tail lift and lots of space. That made loading so much easier. Definitely worth the extra. |
|
Diesel for the van |
£45 |
Did about 20 to the gallon. Maybe a little less. |
|
Wood to make a couple of tressels |
£10 |
Easy job and worth it to bring the chassis up to an easy working height. |
|
Zinc primer |
£26 |
A tin of primer from the local hardware shop, plus several cans of spray from Screwfix. Much better quality and cheaper than Halfords. |
|
Tin of black paint (QD90) |
£9 |
also for the chassis. |
|
Black paint spray |
£36 |
For the suspension and odd bits. (Up to 6 cans now) |
|
Drill bits |
£21 |
This figure is going up - I've broken a lot :~( |
|
Sandpaper |
£8 |
Couldn't buy any elbow grease to go with it :¬( |
|
Waxol kit |
£35 |
It took 2.5 Ltrs to do the chassis |
|
New brake compensator |
£38 |
The 2nd hand one from Tiger was a bit too tatty for me - I like bright shiney things :~) |
|
Hole cutter |
£15 |
For cutting holes in ally and the dash board etc. |
|
New brake pipe |
£17 |
What a bloody rip-off. The pipe from the compensator to the rear of the car was too short (the way I had routed it anyway) I thought it would only be a fiver or so to make a new pipe using my ends ! Rule number one - always ask the price first ! |
|
Pipe bender |
£10 |
Makes a neater job of the brake and fuel pipes |
|
Underseal |
£10 |
A bit more protection for the chassis and it might help cut down the road noise |
|
Rubbercoat |
£33 |
For protecting the wheelarches against star crazing from stone chips |
|
Shot blasting the De-dion unit |
£20 |
Local company did it while I waiting. |
|
Braided flexible brake hoses |
£30 |
Far superior to the standard ones supplied in the kit. |
|
Crimps, etc. |
£15 |
Mixed box of crimps from Screwfix |
|
Odd nuts & bolts |
£20 |
A mixed box of nuts, plus a few specific sizes that I needed. |
|
Manifold gaskets |
£21 |
|
|
Air horn |
£15 |
Well, I can't have a wincey horn, can I ? |
|
Thermostat |
£6 |
|
|
Braided fuel pipe |
£10 |
Tiger supplied enough for the main runs, but Webcon only included the black rubber pipe. I WANT SHINEY STUFF !!! |
|
Hand brake lever and gear knob |
£60 |
Expensive, but they look nice (and shiney !!) |
|
Temperature sender adapters |
£6 |
Many thanks to Paul Toyne for finding out what threads Ford had used. |
|
Earthing strap |
£5 |
For earthing the engine to the chassis. |
|
Pedal covers |
£14 |
Nice red aluminium ones with rubber inserts to keep Mr SVA happy. |
|
Handbrake switch |
£7 |
I got fed up with repeatedly asking Tiger to replace the broken one. I went to a scrappy who just pointed at an old Sierra at the bottom of a heap of 4 cars. I think not. Anyway, I got a new one from Ford, and at £7 it wasn't worth messing about with second hand bits. |
|
Roll bar |
£70 |
Had this zinc sprayed and painted. Not a bad job and it shouldn't rust |
|
Clamps |
£45 |
I got these to clamp the carbon fiber dash onto the skuttle, but they have come in handy for several jobs. Screwfix to the rescue again !! |
|
Brake fluid & Easi-Bleed |
£21 |
The Easi-bleed is well worth the £14. |
|
Bolts & washers |
£12 |
Yet more bloody bolts. - Hot tip - buy shares in Screwfix !!! |
|
Screws and captive nuts |
£6 |
From Halfords to hold the carbon fiber trim panels inplace. |
|
Various bits of trim |
£20 |
From Europa and Woolies to trim off the carbon dash, and add various bits of trim here and there. Makes the car look 'finished' |
|
Battery cable |
£10 |
Tiger didn't supply enough cable to wire in the cut-out switch. |
|
Dash lights |
£10 |
Tiger supplies chrome bezelled one, but I preferred onew with a black bezel as it looks better on the carbon fiber dash. |
|
Various bits of trim, bolts, etc. |
£20 |
Well, I'm guessing at £20 but it's a few trips to Halfrods, Maplins and the Stoneleigh Show. |
|
A Golden grill |
£27 |
Ouch - expensive, but it looks nice. |
